The township was organized in 1838 and named for Ada Smith, daughter of the first postmaster. Its population was 14,388 at the 2020 census, up from 9,882 in 2000. Amway and its parent Alticor have their headquarters here, and the 1867 Ada Covered Bridge over the Thornapple River is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
